The Benefits of the Month of Ramadan
Written by Al-Sheikh Abdul-Qadir Jilani

O young man, the word Ramadan consists of five letters: raa (ر), meem (م), dhaad (ض), alif (ا), and noon (ن). The raa is derived from raḥma (mercy) and ra'fa (graciousness); the meem from mujāzāt (recompense), maḥabba (love), and minna (favor); the dhaad from dhamān lilthawāb (assurance of reward); the alif from ulfa (affinity) and qurb (nearness); and the noon from nūr (light) and nawāl (earning of grace). If you give this month its due and act properly during it, these things will come to you from the True One (mighty and glorified is He). They will come to you in this world in the form of strength and enlightenment to your hearts, and as favors and earning of grace, outwardly and inwardly. In the hereafter there will come to you what no eye has ever seen, no ear has ever heard, and has never occurred to any human being.
